Setup OS X Snow Leopard on VMWare player.
Ok, this is not a 'guide' as such, just some notes about the options I had to choose. It took me about 4 days of working through each issue. All the guides seemed to indicate a very straight forward process. Not my experience.
Using:
Lenovo Y560 (i7 720QM)
Windows 7 64bit
VMWare Player 5.0.0
Installing from existing vmware image.
Problem: Virtualization.
Solution: Need to change CMOS settings in the host machine to allow virtualisation.
Problem: Operating System not found
Solution: Set CD/DVD to use darwin_snow.iso
Problem: Hangs at Apple logo screen
Solution: Wait for 'Press any key to enter startup options'
Press any key before countdown finishes
enter "-v" as a boot option, this will now show where it's stalling
Problem: Stalls at "[ PCI configuration begin ]"
Solution: enter "-v npci=0x2000" as a boot option
Problem: Stalls at "ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::start - waitForService(resourceMatching(AppleIntelCPUPower Management) timed out"
Solution: This is where I had the most difficulty. Most guides say to modify the "smc.present" setting in your vmx file from 'TRUE' to "FALSE". Mine was already set to 'FALSE'. Finally found that adding the boot option "-x PCIRootUID=1" fixed things. Edit: don't actually need the PCIRoot
The full boot options are now: (the -v is optional. Only use if you want to see progress and errors)
npci=0x2000 -x
Snow Leopard now starts, happy days!
I thought I would be able to add these options to the vmx file but that doesn't seem to help. Still need to enter these in the boot options.
